I played my first gig ever when I was 16. A street dance in Rock Hall - and yes we set-up on a hay wagon. None of us had a car so my father loaded up all our stuff and took us to the show. He remained my biggest fan for the rest of his life. On his dresser was a picture of my sister in her cap and gown clutching her diploma. On the other side was an 8/10 glossy of me with long hair, silver boots clutching my Rickenbacker Bass.
The 70's and 80"s found me on the road. I was finally a working (poor) musician. Five years in Baltimore got me established with proper management and contacts, I just needed a good band, oddly enough I found them back home on the Eastern Shore. Eclipse Band was formed, a tour-de-force of sound unique to us. Back out on the road we went. For 4 glorious years we were a regional hit.
Hip Hop came and shot Soul music dead, a tragic loss of quality musicianship. Disco slashed Rock & Roll into a thousand pieces ie. heavy metal, punk, soft rock, glam rock and new country. Drugs and Alcohol oozed from every pore of the industry. Time to give it up and go home!
Sadly for the next 20 yrs. I played in a dozens of local bands performing what is now called classic rock, never once putting pen to paper or chords to words. If it wasn't for the invention of that umbilical cord of information we plug ourselves into every waking hour, all would've been lost years ago. Embracing this new technology I can write and produce freely from some nondescript town on the Eastern Shore of nowhere and with the click of a button reach out to music lovers everywhere.
